    Dear Writer,

    I hope this newsletter finds you well and writing!

    I've been revising my book and decided to start checking out agents. I found a great site and have become quite addicted to it. All the details are in the Cool Announcements.

    I'm working on new interviews and will post them once they're complete.

    Our new mugs will be available soon. Sean has been busy and we haven't had a chance to take pictures and post them. I'm hoping to have new t-shirts up as well.

    Congratulations to our April Cool Contest Challenge Winner - J. Theodor Broyhill!

    You can read J's winning entry in this newsletter and on the web site.

    Thank you to all who entered! I received close to 100 entries! Some of them were quite sad and many were really funny. As I read them, I found myself tearing up one moment and then laughing out loud the next. I truly enjoyed all of them!

    May's contest has to do with WaBoP's - wandering body parts. I read an article about this a long time ago and it cracked me up. I hope you enjoy and have fun with it. May Cool Contest Challenge

    You still have time to enter the Writer's Digest raffle. Two newsletter subscribers will win a one year subscription to Writer's Digest Magazine. No purchase is necessary. Simply send your name to sandy@coolstuff4writers.com with "WD Raffle" in the subject line.

    The deadline is May 31st.

    Thank you again for your continuing support! I truly appreciate your votes and all the kind notes I receive.

    I wish you all a wonderful May! To those of you who are mothers, I wish you a belated Happy Mother's Day! I spent that Sunday watching a Meerkat Manor marathon on Animal Planet and pretty much cried all day. That is such a sad show. On a happier note, my children gave me a pretty wicker tote filled with "at-home" spa treatments. It's so sweet that the kids know Mommy is perpetually stressed out and in need of a relaxing face mask. Sarah just turned 16 and will be driving soon so this gift couldn't have come at a better time. I'm already feeling quite calm - in the past week alone I've had mud on my face twice, I slap the cucumber compresses on my eyes every morning, and I carry the soothing tonic in my purse so I can spray my face when I'm stuck in traffic or waiting in line at the Dunkin Donuts drive-thru - LOL

    Until next time...stay well...stay cool...stay in your write mind!

    April Cool Contest Challenge Winner - J. Theodor Broyhill

    ABC's - Your April challenge was to write a scene using the letters A through M to start each sentence.

    J. Theodor Broyhill sent this winning entry:

    "Justice"

    Arrogantly, Todd glanced at the prosecution as the verdict of not guilty was read by the judge. Bailiffs rushed to his side, fearing an outburst. Curses filled his ears hurled at him from the victim's family.

    Disbelief was etched on nearly every face in the gallery. Everett, Todd's father, was one of the few who could believe. Fortunately, Everett was wealthy and had bought the best team of lawyers his money could buy.

    Ginger didn't deserve to die and certainly not in the manner in which Todd did it. Holding her head under water, watching her eyes as she struggled to survive was monstrous. Indescribable fear must have pulsed through Ginger - electric shock waves of terror. Justice hadn't been served.

    Key in hand, Everett and Todd walked to Everett's car. Lunging out of the shadows, Ginger's father pulled a gun.

    "Murderer", he shouted, pulling the trigger and claiming justice for Ginger.

    J. Theodor Broyhill lives in Yadkinville, NC with her husband, Fireball, and her pound rescue, Mason. She is currently working on her first science fiction short story.

    Writing with Confidence - Unlock Your Potential - by Angela Booth

    The biggest bugbear for new freelance writers, and for some established ones too, is a lack of confidence.

    Are you a confident writer? A confident writer knows his words have value, and enjoys writing. He also knows that since there are unlimited markets for his words, any rejections are just feedback, and blithely submits his words elsewhere.

    When you lack confidence you:

    * Procrastinate, because you're unsure of yourself;

    * Charge less than you're worth - you overestimate each project, and underestimate your own resources and skills;

    * Trash your intuition (your creativity). A confident writer has formed a writing habit which is a partnership with his creativity, and he trusts the words will be there when he needs them. And, magically, they are. Trusting yourself is a big part of being a confident writer;

    * Get stuck in writing ruts. You're nervous about writing anything which is new to you. You write for publications way below your skill level, because you lack the confidence to move out of your comfort zone.

    Let's try a little experiment. Rate your confidence as a writer on a scale from one to ten. One is Extreme Lack of Confidence, and ten is Highly Confident.

    Write down the number, and today's date. Then follow the program below to become extremely confident about your writing within a month.

    How to Get Confident in a 30 Days or Less

    There's a simple program which I've recommended to many writers, because it once worked for me, many years ago. It works for everyone who follows the program.

    Here it is.

    Write an article a day, and publish your article. Yes, that's all there is to the program. It works, because before the month is over, you'll have shifted your focus from thinking about the effects of writing (where you are now) to WRITING itself. Put another way, you will have changed your mental focus from thinking to doing.

    When you're writing, your thoughts are about writing. They're either focused on what you're currently writing, or they're focused on finding ideas and finding markets. This is the mark of a confident writer: eagerness to WRITE.

    So write an article a day, of 400 to 800 words. Your articles can be about anything you choose.

    Now, let's talk about publication. If you're writing for magazines, or want to, then write a magazine query for the article you're writing each day, and send it off to a magazine on the same day. Add this to your cover letter: "Many thanks for your consideration. I'll assume that this article is not for you if I don't hear from you within a week."

    Keep records. Note down the article's title, and where you sent it. Fourteen days after you send off the query for an article, send it somewhere else. You've informed the first editor that that's what you're doing, so do it.

    If you want to write for the Web rather than print publications, you have a choice.

    You can submit your articles to Web sites, using the query method as you'd use for magazines. Or, you can publish your articles on a blog, or you can collect your articles into packages of ten, and sell them on your Web site. If you're selling packages, all articles in a package should be on the same topic; weight loss, for example, or parenting, or - any topic you choose.

    So, rate your confidence on a scale of one to ten. Then, write an article a day, and publish your article. Continue for 30 days. Rate yourself again. You'll be at TEN on the confidence scale, I promise you.

    Want to become a confident writer and write more? Query Tracker

    This site is awesome! Not only can you do a search for agents who represent your genre, but people leave feedback under the agent's info. This is helpful so you know how long they usually take to respond or if they send form rejections and so on.

    They also have a great forum. You can get help with your query letter, read about success stories, discuss agents, get your synopsis reviewed and so much more!

    Of course they also offer a "query tracker' so you can keep track of who you sent your query letters to, how long it took to get a response and if you received a request or rejection.

    You can utilize all this great information for free! I created an account a few weeks ago and I'm totally hooked.

    The owner's name is Patrick and he is very helpful and works hard to keep the information current.

    Congratulations, Patrick for making the "101 Best Web Sites for Writers" for 2008!!

    You can check out it out: www.querytracker.com

    Plot Monkeys

    One of the agents I want to query was interviewed on this blog - that's how I found it - so I thought some of you might find it cool. One of the bloggers is NYT Bestselling author, Carly Phillips.

    Chick Lit Writers of the World

    If you write in this genre, they're holding a great contest - The 2008 Get Your Stiletto In The Door Contest.

    The final judges are all editors and agents. I also like that they offer a sample scoresheet. Even if you're not entering, you should check out the scoresheet - I find it helpful for my own manuscript by asking myself the questions.

    Check it out at: www.chicklitwriters.com
